Chapter 15

The next morning – a windy, wet day that made me grateful to have a car parking spot – I wrestled Jason’s box of papers from the car and took the lift to the office; it was locked, Ed wasn’t in yet. I liked it when he beat me in and turned on the lights, kettle and heater. It was the same feeling as coming home to a warm house. I unlocked the door, flicked on the light switch and placed the box on my desk. The phone rang while I was taking off my coat. It was a potential new publicity client – a charity group wanting publicity for their fund-raising fun run. I made a time to see them and hung up.

I put the kettle on and checked for messages. There were two for Ed from clients, plus a call from the municipal choir wanting us to publicise their next tour. They were a difficult client to promote because of their repertoires. If only they would tour with a selection of popular classics or Andrew Lloyd Weber covers – but no, they picked abstract classical numbers that interested purists only – and with the amount of choice today, people’s entertainment dollar was spread thin enough without that challenge. Nevertheless, it was nice to have a steady stream of clients. I jotted down their details to call them back.

‘Morning!’ I heard Ed announce behind me. ‘Cold enough to freeze your socks off today. Is that coffee you’re making?’

‘Morning, yes it is chilly and yes, coffee is on its way,’ I greeted him.

I watched as he unwrapped layers of scarves, jackets, hats and gloves.

‘Are you in there?’

‘I walked here,’ he explained, his face red from the cold.

‘Why?’

‘Simon has this thing about getting more exercise and fresh air; bracing the elements he calls it.’

‘Life expectancy?’

‘God knows,’ Ed answered. ‘Hopefully he’ll be finished this fad in a week or less.’

‘Must be love,’ I said.

Ed saw my handwritten messages.

‘Mona from the choir!’ he groaned.

‘Yes. There’s one to look forward to.’

‘What is it this time? Schubert Mass No 6 in E flat!’ he rolled his eyes.

‘Actually, that I could market.’

Ed studied me. ‘You look tired. Too many late nights playing with Dominic since he moved in?’ he winked at me.

‘No. Yes. Some of that,’ I confessed. ‘The cases are keeping me awake. My mind’s working overtime and then I dream about them.’ I poured the boiling water into two cups, added milk to the instant coffee, sugar to Ed’s and placed one in front of him.

‘Thank you!’ he wrapped his hands around the cup. ‘I’ll need ten minutes to thaw out.’ He nodded at the box on the floor next to my desk. ‘Publicity or crime-fighting?’

‘Officer Abingdon’s papers. I’m almost finished. Thought I would bump them off this morning, so to speak. Then I’ll call Mona back and that other one too, the fun run lot. How are you going?’

‘Excellent,’ he said logging into his computer. ‘Memories of Summer has paid her bill,
